Beautiful Creatures Movie Review

I went in to this movie not knowing what to expect. I enjoyed the book series, but it wasn't one of my favorites.  I had seen many mixed reviews of the movie. Here are my thoughts:

Pros:
1. ETHAN!!!!!! I have to admit, in the books I definitely wasn't Ethan's biggest fan. However, I really loved him in the movie. Alden Ehrenreich did a great job making Ethan a more likable character. He had a lot of sarcastic lines and brought a lot of heart to the character. I also liked his nerdy glasses.

2. The Casting    The casting for this movie was very good overall. I especially liked the Ethan and Macon castings. Jeremy Irons did a great job portraying Macon as a creepy guy

3. Not staying Totally True to the Book This was a pro and a con. I think changing it actually made the movie more interesting. The producers were able to cut out some of the less necessary details and focus on other important plot points.

Cons:

1. The Ending    The ending was the only part of the movie that I did not thoroughly enjoy. They basically took the ending from the book and chucked it out the window. Lena somehow managed to erase Ethan's memories of her. Then Macon poses as Ethan and dies. I didn't understand this because Lena's saving of Ethan in the book is the catalyst for the rest of the series.

2. Marian    Where on Earth was Marian????? She was one of my favorite characters in the book and there was no sign of her in the movie.  Apparently the creators morphed Amma and Marian's characters together to attract Viola Davis to the role.

3. Not Staying Totally True to the Book  Many plot points and character descriptions were very different in the movie. For example, in the movie Macon is a light/dark caster and in the book he is an incubus (which is kind of a major plot point.  Also, there was a lot less of major characters such as Link and Ridley.

Overall, the movie was very enjoyable. This is probably one of the only times I'll say this, but I liked the movie better than the book. I will give the movie 7 out of 10 stars.
