Legend by Marie Lu

Legend is one of my favorite books, It is the perfect combination of fast-paced action, a complex dystopian society, and an adorable romance.

What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths—until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’s death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets. (summary by Goodreads)

I first read this book over the summer and loved it. I decided to reread it because the second book of the series, Prodigy, came out last week.  I needed something to tide me over until my copy from Barnes and Noble comes in the mail. Here are my thoughts......

Characters:
June is the epitome of a teenage bad ass. She is the Republic's prized Prodigy. She is driven by death of her brother Metias.

Day is definitely one of my favorite YA guys. Even though he is the biggest criminal, he never kills anybody. He is driven by his family and Tess. He has such a sweet heart and even takes June in, even though he doesn't know who she is.

A key part of this book to mention is the awesome side characters. They play a key part in the story. Metias is so protective of June.

Plot
This plot was amazingly fast-paced and complex. It's really interesting to think of the United States in the future broken in half. There were no awkward pauses or boring storylines.

Favorite Parts:
Because this is one of my favorite books, there are little sections that I absolutely adore. These include when Day rescues June from the skizz fight and that beautiful ending.

For Fans of:
Divergent by Veronica Roth and Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Rating:
5 out of 5 stars
